tips

Heat pump and solar panels: how much the roof really covers, month by month, and how to make them work together

A heat pump and photovoltaics go together for a simple reason: the machine uses electricity and the roof makes it. But heating is needed in winter, when the roof makes less, and in the evening, when there is no sun. Anyone promising a zero bill skips this step. Here are the real figures, month by month, and the three ways to make the two work together.

How much a roof produces, month by monthHow much the heat pump asks for, and whenThe real problem is the hours, not the kWhHow many kW of photovoltaics for a heat pumpIn winter the sun helps twiceIn summer the sum works out by itselfAnd in an industrial buildingWhat to ask whoever proposes itFrequently asked questions

01

How much a roof produces, month by month

Take a 6 kWp system, the most common size on a house. In Padua, with the right tilt and orientation, it produces about 8,000 kWh a year (PVGIS data from the European Commission’s research centre). But not evenly: 919 kWh in July and 391 in December, less than half. In Bolzano the figures are almost the same, in Rome December is worth 514. In mid-winter a 6 kWp roof in the Po valley gives on average 13 kWh a day, and gives them between ten in the morning and three in the afternoon.

<picture><img decoding="async" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" data-src="https://templari.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/produzione-fotovoltaico-mensile-6-kwp-en.png" class="lazyload" alt="Monthly output of a 6 kWp photovoltaic system in Padua, Bolzano and Rome, optimal tilt and orientation. On a +7 °C day it asks for about 14 kWh, on a +2 °C day about 20. Next to the 13 kWh a day the roof makes in December, the point is clear: in winter the roof covers part of the heating, not all of it. Over the whole year the sum changes, because in spring, in autumn and for summer hot water the roof produces far more than the heat pump asks for.

03

The real problem is the hours, not the kWh

The sun produces at midday; the house asks for heat mostly in the evening and at night. Without shifting anything, the roof electricity the heat pump really uses is a fraction of what is produced, and the rest goes to the grid for little. To shift the work into the sunny hours there are three possible stores. The electric battery: it works, but costs ten to twenty thousand euros. Water: the hot water cylinder is heated at midday with the sun and the hot water is there in the evening. The walls of the house: that is what the HCC energy optimiser does, heating a little beyond the set point in the sunny hours, putting the heat into walls and screeds and letting them give it back in the evening. It is worth one or two COP points over the season and it is not bought: it is the house.

04

How many kW of photovoltaics for a heat pump

There is no magic number, but the sum takes three steps.

Start from the house’s electricity use without the heat pump: in Italy the typical family is around 2,700 kWh a year.

Add the heat pump: for a house that today burns 1,200 cubic metres of gas, 2,400-2,600 kWh with radiators, 1,800-1,900 with underfloor heating (the sum is in the tip on consumption). In all 4,500-5,300 kWh a year.

A 6 kWp roof produces 8,000: on paper it covers everything. But the annual balance is not self-consumption: without storage the house uses directly part of what it produces and exchanges the rest with the grid. With a cylinder and the optimiser the share used rises; with a battery it rises further.

It makes no sense to enlarge the roof to cover January: in December a double system would make 26 kWh a day instead of 13 and for the rest of the year would give electricity away to the grid. Better 6 kWp sized on consumption and good storage.

05

In winter the sun helps twice

In the sunny hours the outdoor air is warmer, and the heat pump performs better: the SP 10 at part load has a COP of 7.64 at +7 °C and COP 3.59 at -7 °C. When the roof produces, the machine produces heat with less electricity. The energy optimiser exploits exactly this coincidence: it makes the heat pump work in the hours when the sun is out and the air is mild, and lets the machine rest at night, when the COP is worse and the roof is off.

06

In summer the sum works out by itself

Cooling is the perfect case: it is hot when the sun is out, that is when the roof produces. As an order of magnitude you need 500-600 square metres of roof for every 100 kWp, as we explain on the industrial photovoltaics page. De Castelli, at Crocetta del Montello, has 10 Kita Air Cold units of 40 kW, 400 kW in all, integrated with the company’s new photovoltaic system: the air-to-air units heat and cool the building with the roof’s electricity.
