Some are true, others apply to houses and not to industrial buildings. Here we take them one by one, with figures from the more than 4,000 Kita Air units installed in industrial buildings from 300 to 30,000 m².

1. It needs electricity, and the supply is often not enough

This is the most concrete drawback. A Kita Air heats 35 to 47 kW and draws power like a medium-sized machine tool. With five or six units in a 2,500 m² building, the available power must be checked before, not after. We have lost a customer precisely for this reason: the supply was not enough and he did not want to upgrade it.

How it is solved. The site survey measures the available power before the offer. Where it is lacking, the upgrade is requested from the grid operator, which for a company is a routine procedure. Those with photovoltaic panels on the roof produce in-house a good part of what the heat pump consumes, because the hours of sunshine coincide with working hours.

Kita Air outdoor units on the roof of an industrial building, next to the photovoltaic panels that power them during the day.

2. The heat rises to the roof

In a building 8 or 10 metres high, the warm air goes up and the people, who work in the first two metres, stay cold. This is why many air systems heat the roof and not the workshop.

How it is solved, in three steps.

As standard. The split indoor unit has a Venturi-tube deflector: the warm air leaving the coil drags the cold air of the building with it and mixes it before launching it. What comes out is lukewarm air, in a much larger quantity, which does not rise straight to the ceiling. On its own it removes half of the problem.

Optional. A barrier that stops the return air from above, so that the heat that has already risen is not drawn back in and sent up again.

If you want to solve it completely. The floor-standing unit: it draws air from below, filters it and sends it back into the room through motorised adjustable louvres that form an air curtain. The heat stays at floor level, where it is needed. The front filter holds back dust and keeps the air of the department clean, down to one particle per million: it matters where dust does damage, for example in electronics. It costs more than the split unit, and it pays off in tall buildings and where people work standing still.

Split unit: on the left the Venturi-tube deflector plate, with the opening through which the building air enters; behind it the 800 mm fan and the adjustable louvres.

Floor-standing indoor unit: it draws from below, filters and sends the air back through air-curtain louvres.

3. It performs less when it is very cold outside

True for every heat pump: with the outdoor temperature below zero the efficiency drops and the machine has to defrost the outdoor coil. The guides say that at -5 °C the efficiency falls to around 3, that is three kW of heat for one kW of electricity.

How it is solved. The Kita Air works in every weather condition and in every part of Italy. The defrost cycle is patented and is managed by the u-Kita on-board electronics, which start it only when needed. If it snows, you just clear the snow from the outdoor unit. We have systems working at Pila, at 2,723 metres.

Templari heat pumps at the Pila station, 2,723 metres.

4. It costs more than a warm-air heater, but it uses less energy than gas

At purchase it costs more, and there is no point in hiding it. But then every month it consumes less. A gas warm-air heater turns into heat at most what it burns: one kW of gas, less than one kW of heat. A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and, according to the International Energy Agency, with one kW of electricity it produces three to five kW of heat. For the same building, the heating bill goes down, and with photovoltaic panels on the roof part of the electricity is not even bought.

The same machine also cools in summer, which a warm-air heater does not do.

Kita Air in a workshop with the presses at work: the same machine cools in summer.

5. It is noisy and moves air

Here the guides miss the target. Gas warm-air heaters are noisier than a heat pump, because they have a burner and a small fan that spins fast. The Kita Air has an 800 mm indoor fan that turns at about 600 rpm: it moves a lot of air at low speed, and that is why it is quiet. The figures: 42 dB(A) for the split unit at 3 metres, 38 dB(A) for the outdoor unit at 5 metres, less than a conversation.

Where direct air disturbs the work, for example in paint shops or where powders are weighed, there is the ducted unit: the air arrives through ducts, distributed where it is needed.

Wall-mounted split unit in a warehouse: 800 mm fan at low speed.

Ducted unit with fabric duct: the air arrives where it is needed, without a direct jet.

How to know in advance

All five points close the same way: with a site survey.
